The Western Conference Finals, now tied, 2-2, returns to Los Angeles for Game 5 on Thursday night. Game 6 will be Saturday night in Phoenix.
In all, the Suns' reserves outscored the Lakers' bench by a whopping 54-20.
The leaders were Frye and Leandro Barbosa with 14 points each and Jared Dudley with 11. The trio hit 9-for-18 on 3-pointers.
With the Suns leading 89-87 early in the final quarter, each of these players nailed a 3-pointer to give the Suns a decisive 98-89 lead with 6:47 left.
"I thought they were great offensively...and I thought they were better defensively," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said.
With these players leading the way, the Suns starters, including stars Amar'e Stoudemire and Steve Nash, were bench-side cheerleaders for the first nine minutes of the final quarter.
"They're so unselfish," Gentry said of his players.
At one point, Gentry was about to replace Barbosa with starter Jason Richardson, but Richardson told Gentry, "He's going great, let's leave him in."
Gentry said, "It's really different than most NBA teams. We're more like a college team."
Frye had hit only 1-for-20 shots in the first three games.
"I told you I was going to continue to shoot, and my teammates believed in me," he said.
The Lakers concentrated on Stoudemire, who scored 42 Sunday but was held to 21 in this game, still enough to lead the Suns.
"Their game plan tonight was to take me out," Stoudemire said.
For the Lakers, Kobe Bryant was a one-man show on offense. He hit 15-for-22 for 38 points, and he handed out 10 assists.
But the Suns held Pau Gasol (15 points, five rebounds, four blocks) within reason.
Andrew Bynum, playing much better than in Game 3, shot 6-for-9 for 12 points. And Lamar Odom had 15 points and 10 boards off the bench.
But the Lakers' other three reserves shot only 2-for-13.
The Suns played an active zone, one in which the Suns defenders were stationed in specific areas yet they often still managed to match up one-on-one against the Lakers' bigger interior players.
"That's the whole key," Gentry said. "Although it's a zone, we really try to match up. Our guys did a good job of communicating."
Lakers coach Phil Jackson didn't concede that his team couldn't figure out the Suns' defense.
"We shot 49 percent, didn't we? That's pretty good...I have no problem with our offense at all," Jackson said. "I wouldn't say we're struggling against the zone. We're struggling at the defensive end.
"They were more aggressive on the boards (the Suns had a 51-36 edge). That created an atmosphere I didn't like."
The teams then exchanged a stunning series of 3-pointers, with Bryant effectively going against the Suns' entire second unit, led by Frye.
The Suns stretched the lead to 53-43 on Frye's second of a trio of first-half 3-pointers.
By halftime, the Suns led 64-55 with the Suns' reserves outscoring the Lakers' bench 34-11. Frye scored 11, while only Odom (nine points) was a factor among the Lakers' reserves.
Bryant put on a spectacular shooting display in the third quarter, hitting 3-for-4 on 3-pointers and scoring 16.
The Lakers surged closer and closer, then briefly took an 84-83 lead in the closing moments of the third quarter and again at the start of the fourth quarter, 87-85.
But much to Jackson's chagrin, the Lakers took -- and missed -- a series of 3-pointers.
That's the Suns' game. And that's when Frye and company went to work.
Strangely, the Lakers never really got the ball much again to Bryant. He took only four shots in the final quarter.
"We didn't lose the game because of that," Bryant said. "We lost the game because our defense sucked."
For the second straight game, the Suns outshot the Lakers at the line: The Suns were 22-for-32 while the Lakers were 7-for-13.
"They beat us at the foul line both nights, and that was the margin. We have to do a better job in that activity."
Asked if the officiating was a factor, Jackson said, "Oh no."
But he also said, "It seemed like every time we went near them they fell down at some level....So we just have to be more resilient out there defensively."
